A Parent's Treasure

A Parent's Treasure Luke 2:1-18 Introduction A. Heading off to school is an anxious time for students and a reflective time for parents B. Could it be that the little one in arms is now ready for school? I. Two Parents Heard Good Things about their Child (Luke 2:35) A. What the angel had said: Mt. 1:20f. (Joseph) Luke 1:26f. (Mary) 2:10 (Shepherds) B. What the shepherds have said (Luke 2:17 – 18) C. “Kept” or “treasured” these amazing proclamations about who this child will be. 1. “Kept” - (suntereo),; to keep closely together, i.e. (by impl.) to conserve (from ruin); to remember (and obey):--keep, observe, preserve. 2. A parent’s treasure is the collection of good memories from obedient children who love God and honor their parents. D. What was said about this Child? 1. (Luke 2:11) Announcement by angels to shepherds 2. (Luke 2:25 – 35) Simeon’s prophesy a. Your Salvation (Isaiah 52:10) b. Light to Gentiles (Isaiah 9:2; 42:6; 49:6) c. Glory of Israel (Isaiah 60:1 – 3) 3. Some things you may not want to hear even though true. (cf. Isaiah 51:6; 53) a. Sword piercing pain when you realize what it will cost your child to stand for God and expose wickedness in the lives of men. b. Will you encourage them to shrink back or embrace the suffering? c. Romans 8:16 – 18 “ d. Hebrews 10:5 – 7 4. Anna – the prophetess (84 years old) a. She hung out at the temple all day and night b. Served with prayer and fasting c. Spoke of Jesus to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem (i) (Luke 1:68) “For He has visited and redeemed His people,” Zacharias (ii) (Luke 2:25) “waiting for the Consolation of Israel,” Simeon 5. Luke 2:33 Parents are amazed regarding all of the accolades given this forty day old child. II. Two Parents Did Good Things with their Child 2/2 A. Favor of God – they obeyed at his birth (Leviticus 12; Luke 2:22 – 24, 27) 1. At God’s direction they circumcised their son on the eight day (Lev. 12:3) 2. They named him Jesus as the angel of God had directed. B. At God’s direction Mary participated in the purification rites (Lev. 12:4) 1. At God’s direction this poor couple was permitted to offer two turtle doves or two young pigeons as the appropriate sacrifices at the birth of their child. C. At God’s direction they presented their child to God (Luke 2:22,23, 27; 1. Redemption of the firstborn. (Exodus 13:2,12) 2. Every last thing God required for their child – they did (Luke 2:27) 3. “And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord” (Luke 2:39) D. They took Jesus with them to the required feasts “every year” (Luke 2:41) 1. (Deut. 16:16) “Three times in a year all your males shall appear before the Lord your God in the place He chooses…” 2. Parents who love the Lord see that their children participate in the assemblies. III. Two Parents Let their Child Grow and Go (Luke 2:41 – 52) A. Favor of God – Child obeyed. (Luke 2:40 – 52) 1. The Child grew and became strong (cf. Luke 1:80) cousin John 2. The Child was more than smart – he was growing in wisdom. 3. The Child saw the parents obey God and he obeyed God. 4. The grace of God was upon Him. (Luke 2:40 and 14 favored, delight, good pleasure – “in whom I am well pleased” Luke 3:22) 5. The grace of God upon your child is a greater blessing than any scholarship or academic accolade. B. When your children grow you don’t always know where they are. (2:44) C. Well trained and obedient (it takes both) children are going to be busy in the work of the Father. D. We not only want our children to grow up on the outside, we take the greatest pleasure (treasure) in observing their growth on the inside. (Luke 2:51) read 1. We are glad that our children are considered a “favor” (charis – grace) to men. 2. We especially treasure that our children enjoy the “favor” (grace) of God. E. Conclusion: Parent’s treasure many things, nothing more dearly than to know that “my children walk in the truth” (3 John 4).
